The IFBC is Going International – Explore Juárez

August 17, 2021 by Sarah Wohlner

Updated: September 7, 2021

The International Food Blogger Conference will take place in El Paso from March 17-20, 2022. But really, how can we go to El Paso without visiting Juárez, Mexico? Juárez is located 5 minutes away across the border. Chefs from El Paso often travel several times back and forth throughout the day to gather ingredients. Travel is completely safe. We have two incredible guided events planned in Juárez!

About Juárez

Juárez, also called Ciudad Juárez, is a Mexican city that lies on the Rio Grande, 5 minutes south of El Paso in the state of Chihuahua. Juárez’s population is estimated to be 1.5 million people. Juárez is safe. In fact, it is safer than many U.S. cities, especially for tourists. Upon research you might hear otherwise however, the city has done a remarkable job at turning this around to make it not just a safe visit but an enjoyable one too. Now, three fun facts! 1) Juan Méndez, a street vendor in Chihuahua, Mexico, invented the burrito. 2) Juárez is home to the Mexican vaquero (cowboy) culture. 3) In 2020, there were 295 days of sunshine.

Thursday Welcome Reception – Viva México

Juarez is the biggest door of Mexico, a country with a mix of pre-Hispanic cultures, filled with good food, kind, fun-loving people. Experience a show like no other in which we showcase the best of our folklore, dances, mariachis, and more! Just 5 minutes away from Crossing Borders. We start IFBC21 with a bang. Our Welcoming Reception will take place at the amazing Viva Mexico restaurant. But calling it a restaurant alone does not do it justice.

Yes, we will be eating dinner at Viva Mexico. The full dinner buffet will feature dishes from throughout Chihuahua and Mexico. We will also be there early to get special presentation on preparation of some of the more famous cultural foods, such as Margaritas and Guacamole.

In addition, after dinner we will be treated to a Fiesta Mexicana, a show featuring dancers, horsemen, and singers highlighting the local culture.

Post-Conference Excursion – Mysticism in Dunes

The Samalayuca Dunes are located in the middle of the desert in northern Chihuahua state, only 30 minutes from Ciudad Juárez. If you have never had the opportunity to stand in a real desert landscape, such as the Sahara, now is your chance.

We will visit the desert for both fun and food. Starting out we’ll enjoy several hours of adventure. You can choose to do a Jeep or ATV ride through the dunes for amazing views and a few thrills. Or you can choose to try the sport of sandboarding, similar to snowboarding but on a totally different material. Or you can choose to take a walk and learn about the dunes from a naturalist’s perspective.

Then it is on to the food portion of the event. We’ll start with a tasting and lesson on Sotol, the distilled beverage native to Chihuahua that is similar to tequila. We’ll then have a “Mysticism at the Desert” lunch, full of food local to this area of Mexico.

We will be chaperoned from our hotel in El Paso to the desert via bus and escorted throughout our time in Mexico. Come see how the locals vacation!

Travel and Passports

Passports are recommended to travel to and from Juárez. Passport cards will also be accepted. If you don’t have a passport or a passport card you will be able to cross over with a birth certificate or just an official ID card. Our hosts are working with our local CBP office to help out the process. Please make sure all your documents are up-to-date.

Safety

Is it safe to visit Juárez? Absolutely! Locals cross the border all the time, often living on one side and commuting to the other. In Mexico, we will be on a bus that takes us straight to the restaurant.

We hope you join us at the IFBC this year and partake in these once-in-a-lifetime events! Register Now!

Blog ‘Gram: Repurposing Blog Content to Instagram – Recap

March 3, 2021 by Sarah Wohlner

The IFBC21 Social Media Virtual Summit took place on January 15, 2021. We had an informative session with Instagram guru Tameka Bazile. Read on to learn how to create multiple pieces of IG content from one blog post creating fun, viral and engaging videos, static and live content around your blogs! *This is a summary of her talk. You can view the full video session by registering now.*

1. Are you ready for Instagram?

“The secret to growth + sales on Instagram is knowing how your brand should translate to the platform. This demands you create a following based on reciprocity, connection, and community.”

Instagram is a community-based app while blogs tend to be just you and your keyboard. Are you ready to come out from behind the keyboard? If yes, keep reading.

2. How to repurpose blog content

Toni from @boulderlocavore does an excellent job at turning blog posts into engaging IG posts and driving traffic.

You are busy! There is never enough time to create original content for each individual platform. Here is how can you repurpose blog content to make your life easier:

  • Step 1: Recognize content to repurpose
    • Take apart the blog post
      • Subtopics (why you created the recipe, how long it took to make the recipe, equipment, etc.)
      • Content pillars
      • Delivery
  • Step 2: Create content
    • Use templates
    • Share the same photos on your blog to Instagram
    • Turn your blog post into a video
  • Step 3: Post on IG
    • You don’t need to show up in every aspect of Instagram in order to be successful. Try focusing on two or three of the following:
      •  IGTV (1+ minute video)
      • Reels (15-30 second video)
      • Stories (learn how to engage your following on Stories from Jenny Melrose)
      • Main Feed

Register now to get more information and listen to the full video session from Tameka Bazile! To view all sessions from the January 15, 2021, Social Media Virtual Summit check out our Agenda Page.

Getting Sponsored Content (Even if Your Blog Isn’t Famous)

April 9, 2019 by Sarah Wohlner

This guest post is by IFBC19 speaker Raj Thandhi of Pink Chai Living

It’s not easy for me to say, but I’ve been blogging for nine years, and I’m still only moderately successful in terms of online fame. My pageviews are okay, my social media following is nothing to boast about, and my YouTube channel is a passion project that never quite took off.

You might be thinking ‘why is this girl still blogging then?!’ The truth is, my blog is profitable. Yup, I make enough money from my blog and social media channels to make it worth the effort to run them.

A little sidebar before we talk more about business. My blog is also a creative outlet that I love, but for the purpose of this chat, I’m talking just dollars and cents.

Like most other bloggers I really wanted to make it big. I imagined getting a cookbook deal, endorsing major brands, having a line at Target (until they went bust in Canada), the whole nine yards. But that never happened for me, and the true success didn’t come until I stopped trying to be North America famous, and focussed on being hyper-local and catering to a niche.

There are two things that are unique to me and my blog. First-off I live in a city called Surrey BC, where almost no one wants to admit they are from, and very few lifestyle and food bloggers boast about living. Secondly, I’m South Asian. I took these two factors and turned them into an opportunity to create unique partnership opportunities. I’ve collaborated with my local tourism marketing board to show “big-city” bloggers the great hole-in-the-wall restaurants in my hood, and I’ve worked with mainstream brands to create campaigns around ethnic holidays that no one was talking about, and I’ve managed to with national brands like Kraft, Lindt, and Bounty by maintaining a highly engaged audience.

In addition to my creative collaborations, I also started a social media marketing company that specializes in working with food, travel, and hospitality businesses, and I’m a partner in a blogger’s network called South Asian Bloggers Network, which connects businesses and brands with an underserved audience.

At the Food Blogger’s Conference in Juneau, I’ll be sharing my top tricks and tips for finding unique sponsorship opportunities. Maybe the biggest brands won’t work with you (yet), but we can figure what is unique to you that can be marketed – even if you aren’t a superstar!

Your unique selling point doesn’t have to be as obvious as ethnicity. Are you an expert on craft beer in your region? Vegan food writer? Do you make the best darn lunchbox snacks for littles? In my session I’m going to show you my strategy for matching your “secret sauce” with a regional marketing strategy, and amplifying it by showing a brand your expertise in reaching a certain audience.
