Say Heck Yes to Live Streaming

March 10, 2022 by Sarah Wohlner

This guest post is by IFBC22 sponsor Ecamm Live

Kathy Hester is a home chef, cookbook author, blogger, and digital marketing expert. Over the last 14 years in the industry, she has sold over 150,000 cookbooks.

Kathy also teaches live streaming and video production with a focus on finding your authentic self and pushing past feelings of fear and shyness. Five years ago, if you had asked Kathy to go live, she likely would have told you “heck no.”

In fact, she did.

“I remember my business coach, Jenny Melrose, telling me to just go live. And I was like, no. Finally, I agreed to pitch live streaming to a company I was working with and they said yes! Since I had never done live streaming before, I had nothing to show them. But they wanted four live stream broadcasts, so I had to learn how to go live.”

Like starting a blog, or writing a cookbook, Kathy decided to jump in with both feet and just give it a try. And do you want to know a secret? Those first four episodes weren’t perfect, but they were impactful.

“I honestly believe that there’s just X amount of crap that you have to go through and get out of the way to get to that good spot. I’m not sad that I had to do the live streams that way. It forced me to just start and go live. Now my studio is set up in my kitchen and I’ll go live at the drop of a hat. You’ll never really succeed unless you’re willing to fail.”

One of the biggest selling points of getting started with live streaming is that it’s raw and authentic. When you’re live, you’re not able to hide behind fancy video edits or tweaks. It’s what you say is what you get – ums and all. That authenticity is what builds a viewership and community behind you and your content. It’s also what can be scary and uncomfortable when you’re getting started.

“It’s like learning to cook. I can tell you that I’ve messed up some stuff in my life and that’s OK. Your homemade pasta and sauce is always going to be better than box pasta and canned tomato sauce, even if it’s not perfect to you. Video is the same way. You can do a great job even if your lighting isn’t there or you don’t have the best camera… you can still have that connection with your viewers. We all need to get comfortable with uncomfortableness.”

Live streaming helps Kathy welcome her readers and fans into her kitchen to spend time with her, ask questions, and learn something new. Sometimes she’s walking through a recipe, other times she’s testing out a new kitchen gadget, or making a spice blend. Her community shows up to each live stream because, to them, it feels like they’re coming over for a visit with her.

And that’s the goal.

When Kathy became a vegetarian back in 1983, you couldn’t even buy tofu in a grocery store. There was no real support for that diet and lifestyle So she taught herself how to cook. She developed not only recipes, but also the process for how to be successful as a vegetarian. Through her food blog and cookbooks, she’s able to share recipes with everyone. Live streaming allows her to welcome those people into her kitchen and give them the opportunity to know her better and learn her approach to cooking – it’s more than just the recipes.

About five years ago, Kathy attended a plant-based food conference. While she was there, she met some of her cookbook and blog readers. After just a few minutes of hearing their stories, it became apparent that Kathy’s readers weren’t just in it for the one-off recipe – being vegan or vegetarian was a part of who they were.

While her cookbooks and blog were certainly working well for her, there was an opportunity to build a community and connect with her readers and fans in a different way.

Kathy’s Facebook community now has about 7,000 members. They share recipes, tips and tricks, and more. It’s also a safe space where everyone can ask questions, try things out, and make it all their own. Live video is integral to this community.

“If I’m having a rough week or I’m just really busy, my community jumps in and answers questions for me. In many ways, that’s happening because of my live videos – because we’ve had that connection together live. They’ve seen me preparing a meal and watched me as I double checked to make sure I had enough water added or diced an onion in a particular way. They know how I approach cooking and they feel comfortable helping each other. They’ve basically taken it and run with it.”

To plan and produce her live broadcasts, Kathy uses Ecamm Live. With Ecamm, Kathy is able to connect multiple cameras (including an overhead camera so you can see her hands as she preps recipes), improve her audio, present recipes, images, and video clips, and even show viewer comments on screen. And she does it all from her Mac computer right in her kitchen.

The best part? Once the live stream ends, Kathy has a copy of her video automatically saved on her computer so she can share it with those who missed it live, trim it up for social posts, or even grab the transcript to turn the video into a blog post.

In order to make things easier and ensure everything is always ready to go, Kathy keeps her live streaming gear (cameras, microphones, computer, lighting, etc) set up all the time so that she can just walk into her kitchen, turn everything on, and go. This not only saves her time, but also makes it easier for her to be consistent in creating content because she’s not stuck with having to set things up and take them down each and every time she wants to make a video or share a recipe or story with her community.

Kathy may have thought “heck no” when first thinking about live streaming, but now going live is second nature and central to all she does.

If you’ve been saying “heck no” about live video, but Kathy’s story has you thinking differently, get in touch! We’d love to show you how Ecamm Live can make a difference and how you can be up and running with live streaming quickly and easily. Try Ecamm Live today for FREE at www.ecamm.live

5 Strategies to go Viral on TikTok

March 10, 2021 by Sarah Wohlner

The IFBC21 Social Media Virtual Summit took place on January 15, 2021. We had an excellent session with TikTok expert Sarah Wohlner. Read on to learn how to create a viral TikTok and get the views you deserve! *This is a summary of her talk. You can view the full video session by registering now.*

We all want to go viral, right?! You get more followers, more shares, more comments, more opportunities and it’s just more fun.

1. The Basics

While this might be boring or technical, it’s necessary to mention. To go viral consistently, you must have the basics down. I’m talking about the following:

  • Video quality
    • lighting
    • sound
    • background
    • video clarity
  • Specs
    • Orientation: Vertical is best.
    • Dimensions: 1080×1920
    • Aspect ratio: 9:16 is best
    • File type: .mp4 and .mov files
  • Length
    • Between 1 sec to 60 seconds
  • Be you!
    • That’s not so basic but it is the minimum you should be doing. There is no one like you!

2. A Hook

We all learned in grade school that your writing needs a good hook. Same thing here. Your video needs a hook. Think about all the other content out there and how easy it is for people to swipe right past your video. In the first 3 seconds, you need to capture the attention of your viewer. This could be something you say or something you show. Register for the full session for examples.

3. Be Controversial

I’m not talking about religion or politics, I’m talking *food* controversial. If you have a blog or social media, you probably know what I’m talking about. Some people get heated over food and they will let you know. This is great for you because this will result in more comments and therefore more engagement which tells TikTok they should push your video to more people.

  • Examples:
    • Saying something like “ranch is the worst sauce” or “white chocolate is the best chocolate.”
    • Or show a recipe where you over-seasoning or under-seasoning your food.

Check your blog and social media posts, I’m sure you have a recipe or two that’s already considered controversial. Use that to your advantage. Register for the full session for more examples.

4. TikTok Trends

There’s a whole page on TikTok dedicated to current viral trends. Check it out on a daily basis and if anything fits your content try to participate. Even if it doesn’t fit your specific content and you just want to participate, go for it!

5. Quantity or Quality

This probably sounds a little backward, but stay with me. I’m not saying sacrifice your quality, I’m saying quality is subjective. Don’t be so hard on yourself and critical. TikTok is different than other platforms. I would say, it’s more casual. People like seeing the real you. When in doubt, post. Just think to yourself, does it meet the following:

  • Is it…
    • … educational
    • … emotional
    • … entertaining
    • … engaging

Above all else, have fun! It will all be fine. What’s the worst that can happen? You post a video, no one sees it but you gain more knowledge and experience. That’s a win! Check me out on TikTok at @TasteandTraveler for some examples of how I implemented these strategies and tag me in your video so I can see what you’re up to. 🙂

Blog ‘Gram: Repurposing Blog Content to Instagram – Recap

March 3, 2021 by Sarah Wohlner

The IFBC21 Social Media Virtual Summit took place on January 15, 2021. We had an informative session with Instagram guru Tameka Bazile. Read on to learn how to create multiple pieces of IG content from one blog post creating fun, viral and engaging videos, static and live content around your blogs! *This is a summary of her talk. You can view the full video session by registering now.*

1. Are you ready for Instagram?

“The secret to growth + sales on Instagram is knowing how your brand should translate to the platform. This demands you create a following based on reciprocity, connection, and community.”

Instagram is a community-based app while blogs tend to be just you and your keyboard. Are you ready to come out from behind the keyboard? If yes, keep reading.

2. How to repurpose blog content

Toni from @boulderlocavore does an excellent job at turning blog posts into engaging IG posts and driving traffic.

You are busy! There is never enough time to create original content for each individual platform. Here is how can you repurpose blog content to make your life easier:

  • Step 1: Recognize content to repurpose
    • Take apart the blog post
      • Subtopics (why you created the recipe, how long it took to make the recipe, equipment, etc.)
      • Content pillars
      • Delivery
  • Step 2: Create content
    • Use templates
    • Share the same photos on your blog to Instagram
    • Turn your blog post into a video
  • Step 3: Post on IG
    • You don’t need to show up in every aspect of Instagram in order to be successful. Try focusing on two or three of the following:
      •  IGTV (1+ minute video)
      • Reels (15-30 second video)
      • Stories (learn how to engage your following on Stories from Jenny Melrose)
      • Main Feed

How to overcome your fear and get into YouTube already! – Recap

February 24, 2021 by Sarah Wohlner

For the IFBC21 Social Media Virtual Summit on January 15, 2021, we had an informative session with YouTube expert Lorena Graeter from Green Healthy Cooking. Read on to learn specifics recording techniques to get you started on YouTube. *This is a summary of her talk. You can view the full video session by registering now.*

1. No one cares about you

We mean this in the nicest way possible! They care about themselves and what they will get out of the video. No one notices the little things that you notice. Immediately after the video, viewers will go about their day while you spend the entire day stressing about something no one noticed. Don’t let that happen! Have some confidence!

2. Techniques for recording video

  • Look directly into the lens and imagine someone you trust sitting on a little chair in the back on the lense (don’t look at yourself on the side view)
  • Take the recipe step by step if you feel overwhelmed having to record the entire thing. You can stop and start as many times as you want and edit.
  • Film your videos where ever you have the best natural lighting, even if it’s not in the kitchen. Natural light is the best, much better than cheap lights.
  • Experiment with different videos to see what your audience wants. Are they looking for a short concise video or long stories about you and the recipe? Find out and stick to that.
  • If you write out a script, write it in a conversational tone. Include things like, “Yeah!” or “Yumm!”
  • 3 Second Rule: People get bored if they view the same things for longer than three seconds. You can show the same ingredient, but change up the angle.

3. Recommended equipment

  • External microphone
  • Camera
  • Recorder
  • Tripod
  • C Stand

4. “Your first video on YouTube should be horrible!”

If you’re already proud of your nice, well-filmed video, you started too late. You’ve missed six months of practicing in front of the camera. The more you practice the better.
