Attendee Quotes from IFBC18

October 4, 2018 by Allan

What did our attendees think of IFBC18 in New Orleans? We’ll let them tell us with these dozen quotes from a dozen different attendees.

This is my first out-of-Utah food blogging conference and first time at IFBC. This was the FIRST conference I feel I got my educational ROI. I am not a newbie to food blogging. I actually learned tangible, applicable, do XYZ type of information. That is never the case at these things. IFBC presenters gave me real, practical, step-by-step advice to become better; that was a refreshing thing that will have me returning to IFBC again.

IFBC inspired me to work harder and push further to blog as a business. It showed me ways to bring in income, up my game, improve my work, and increase my influence. I met great people and enjoyed myself while learning and gaining insights and contacts for my work. Loved the NOLA setting and the dynamic and generous speakers.

I had an overall wonderful time with the conference. Convenient and quite awesome conference venue, excellent speakers/presenters, excursions, and people.

I felt it was thoughtfully and well organized. A great combination of educational sessions, experiences featuring the hosting city and chances to mingle with other conference attendees.

Had an amazing time! Staff was great! Attendees were very warm and welcoming! I’ve already registered for next year!

As a first time attendee, I was very impressed. The conference was well organized, the topics were right on target, the speakers were fantastic, and the venue was perfect.

I had an amazing weekend! I’ve never been more inspired or excited about blogging!!!

I had a wonderful time, the people and organizers were all amazing, and I really enjoyed the other speakers.

Really good conference. I left with so much great information (especially Pinterest and Storytelling by Video) and renewed inspiration. Always fun to meet other food bloggers as well.

As an introvert that didn’t really know anyone at the conference I appreciated the mixers and planned activities; they gave me reasons to talk to people and mix. Those relationships ended up being amazing and I loved learning about everyone.

The Friday evening Taste of New Orleans was spectacular. It was great for food bloggers to get a flavor of the NOLA local restaurant food scene.

There are one or two conferences I would put on par with yours in several areas, but overall you were much better than all the others.

Survey Results: What You Thought About IFBC18

September 25, 2018 by Allan

We have used the same post-conference survey and five-point rating scale for the past 11 years, for all five conferences we at Zephyr Conferences run. So when we see your ratings and read your comments, we take them seriously. In the spirit of openness, here is how we did at the 2018 International Food Blogger Conference in New Orleans.

Where We Excelled

  • Organization: Our 11 years of experience running conferences pays off. 87% of our attendees rated our organization as Very Good or Outstanding. Thanks goes in large part to Sara in our office who is responsible for actually running the event!
  • Communications: We make it a point to communicate with you, our community, before, during, and after the event. This was one of the highest-rated aspects in our post-conference survey.
  • Keynote Speaker: Michael Twitty from Afroculinaria was our highest-rated session of the entire conference. He provided an inspiring and emotional talk.
  • Content in General: 77% of attendees said our content was better than or the same as competitor food blogger conferences.
  • Overall Event: 76% of attendees rated the overall conference as better or the same as other food blogger conferences and 79% rated the IFBC as more or the same amount of fun. It helps to move the conference to locations like New Orleans and Juneau each year!

Where We Can Improve and How We Will

  • Food: The IFBC is known for having the best food of any food blogger conference, in part because we move the conference each year and gain the support of local partners who want to put on a great show. Unfortunately, in 2018 we did not have the strong local support we usually get and this affected our ratings. For 2019, we are already working with our Juneau partners who have committed to provide an opening reception, a Taste of Juneau event, and a gift suite of food products. This will all be supplemented with our other sponsors and partners.
  • National Brands: While people loved the large number of New Orleans food companies at IFBC18, we had fewer national brands at our conference this year and our attendees noticed. We will work to rectify that. Calling all brands – our attendees want you at IFBC19!
  • Advanced Content: We were told (not for the first time) that presentations were not at an advanced enough level. This despite having us specifically ask our speakers to present more advanced content. For 2019, we will not rely on our speakers but will be adding seven full hours of content specifically geared towards advanced writing, social media, and technology. To make sure we deliver, we are labeling these with an graphic on our Agenda.

Overall, we are pleased our 2018 attendees enjoyed the conference and look forward to an even better event in 2019!

International Food Blogger Conference Heading to Juneau, Alaska in 2019!

August 25, 2018 by Allan

The International Food Blogger Conference will take place from June 20 – 23, 2019 in Juneau, Alaska. Registration is open now!

Ever been to Alaska? It’s an amazing state and is easier to get to than you might think.” Juneau, the capital city, is a fantastic small town of 32,000 people situated at the base of Mount Roberts, nestled near the huge Mendenhall Glacier, and surrounded by forests and water. In fact, there are no roadways connecting Juneau to any other cities! Here is a quick visual overview of Juneau:

The wilderness and sense of adventure is only part of the draw. Juneau’s food scene is booming, including outstanding restaurants, award-winning chefs, and our own alumna Midgi Moore’s Juneau Food Tours, recently named one of America’s must-try food tours by USA Today.  See this short video for a taste of Juneau’s food:

We are extremely pleased to be working with our friends at Travel Juneau to make sure this is a must-attend event. Here is what is in store:

  • An opening reception sponsored by the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute and the Alaskan Brewing Co
  • A Taste of Juneau event featuring 15-20 local restaurants serving small bites
  • An Alaska-focused Gift Suite that will allow you to pick and choose from among a variety of Alaskan packaged foods
  • Pre-Conference and Post-Conference Excursions getting you out of the meeting hall and into the local food and adventure scene
  • A rate of $179 (excellent for high season in Juneau) for the Westmark Baranof hotel – you can book your IFBC room online now using group code IFBC2019
  • Only a short two-hour flight from Seattle with a 10% discount offered by Alaska Airlines
  • 18 hours and 15 minutes of sunlight while we are there!
  • The great content, speakers, networking, and fun you expect at the IFBC!

We at the IFBC try hard to locate our conference in exciting food destinations worthy of your time as a busy food blogger, writer, or social media influencer. We believe Juneau is just that and hope you can join us in 2019.

IFBC to Return to New Orleans August 24 – 26, 2018

October 1, 2017 by Allan

We are extremely excited to return to New Orleans for the 2018 International Food Blogger Conference, the 10th year of the conference. The conference will take place at the Royal Sonesta hotel from August 24 – 26. Registration is open now.

We held the IFBC in New Orleans back in 2011 and that event was the highest scoring IFBC ever, in ratings from attendees. The content and speakers rated highly and attendees loved being right in the French Quarter, a short walk from Bourbon Street.

But what really grabbed everyone’s attention was the amazing food. We had full buffets of delicious Cajun, seafood, and other regional specialties. In fact, 95% of attendees that year who expressed an opinion said the food at the IFBC was better than other food blogger conferences they had attended.

Hence, we thought it appropriate to return to the location of our highest-rated conference for our 10th anniversary year. Here are a few things you can expect:

  • Outstanding regional cuisine, once again.
  • The AAA Four Diamond-rated Royal Sonesta New Orleans, located right in the French quarter and with a recent refurbishment and great rates of $169 per room. We love the Royal Sonesta for its location, its original architecture, and for the welcome they are eager to show food bloggers.
  • New events including a series of five-minute Lightning Talks on Friday evening from your fellow attendees and a B2I (Business to Influencer) networking session.
  • A switch back to our classic Friday evening through Sunday noon schedule.

Prices for the conference are $295 for “Citizen” Bloggers/Influencers and $495 for Corporate attendees. Registration is open now.

Improving the International Food Blogger Conference

March 10, 2017 by Allan

We heard you – and as the organizers of the International Food Blogger Conference, we would like to own up to a few areas in which we did not perform as highly as we could have last year and share with you how we plan to improve. This conference is for you and about you, and as the longest-running conference dedicated to food bloggers, we’re committed to listening to you and working for you. We love what we do, in short, because of you. So, here’s our plan and commitment for 2017 and beyond based on the feedback you provided.

Content Subject Areas: We admit we fell in love with the Sacramento “farm to fork” theme and we added quite a few content sessions related to this topic. However, our 2016 attendees were clear in telling us this was not the subject matter of interest of greatest interest to them. “This is supposed to be a food blogging conference, not a food conference,” they might as well have told us.

What We Will Do: Go back to our focus on blogging, social media, writing, and technology. We will still incorporate “farm to fork,” but this will take place in the pre-conference and post-conference excursions to local farms, wineries, and businesses.

Content Quality: We also did not do a good enough job getting our speakers to deliver content that is advanced enough for our audience. This left some of our sessions too full of fluff.

What We Will Do: As we did last year, we will incorporate an annual standard content search including a public Call for Content (this year’s open through March 13th), a private vote on potential sessions by IFBC Alumni, a Presenters Packet sent to selected speakers, and detailed communication up to and after the event with speakers. We have also implemented the first-ever Advisory Board for the IFBC, with which we will confer and collaborate on all things IFBC. We expect these processes to ensure high-quality, advanced-level, real-world, blogging-focused content for our attendees.

Date Selection: We erred in selecting the 2017 date which conflicts with a major Jewish holiday. This was not intentional and has nothing to do with being political, anti-religious, or even anti-Semitic. If you know us, you know that couldn’t be further from the truth. Rather, it was solely due to having limited options in Sacramento where we were already committed for 2017, including negotiating with four separate hotels until finally moving to the convention center.

What We Will Do: Plan farther in advance. Securing locations for the following year is a BIG project and we usually start well in advance. Because we knew we would be returning to Sacramento, we let this process slide until too late in the year, and our options were gone. In the future, we will not repeat this error and apologize sincerely for the unfortunate timing this year.

Thank you to everyone that provided feedback after the 2016 event. Your thoughts, insights and ideas are always welcome and an important aspect of what makes the IFBC one of the best food blogger conferences available. We also appreciate your praise and comments about the good aspects of the conference, and will continue to work to enhance those areas as well. But one never improves by focusing on what one does well, and it is important to us to own up publicly when we do fall short of our high standards.

With that said, we want you to know that we love what we do and that we’re committed to providing you with an event that propels your passions. We want to do the best job possible and we’ll do that, in part, by listening to you.

We believe in the mission of the IFBC and will continue to foster its success as well as yours! We hope to see you in September in Sacramento. You can register here – and please note, we’re extending the early bird discount through April 4, 2017!
