Survey Results from IFBC19 in Juneau, Alaska

July 29, 2019 by Allan

We at Zephyr Conferences are a bit unusual in that we like to post a recap of our conferences and share some of the positives and negatives of it as seen by you, our attendees.

We have used the same 5.0 rating scale for the last 22 years, first with our active travel tours and for the last 12 years with our conferences. This allows us to compare all sessions and events at a conference with each other and with other conferences. And we make things difficult on ourselves by weighting the scale to be difficult, with a four meaning “very good” and a five meaning “outstanding”.

What You Loved

The Events: We asked our attendees to rate 12 separate events at IFBC19. For 11 of the 12, you rated the event a 4.30 or higher. Six of those events scored a 4.70 or higher. These are truly amazing scores for a conference full of people who have different likes and tastes. The events, excursions, and food rocked.

Food: 95% of you rated the food at IFBC19 as better than (63%) or equal to (32%) other food blogger conferences you have attended.

Fun: 100% of you rated IFBC19 as more fun (68%) or the same amount of fun (32%) as other food blogger conferences you have attended.

Operations: Your scores for Communications and Organization are excellent. Thank you. Although we are a small company, we do think we are pretty good at running an event, whether it be a bike tour in Italy, a wine media conference in Australia, or a food blogger conference in Juneau.

What We Need to Improve

The good thing is that there is really just one thing we need to improve for IFBC20 in El Paso. The bad thing is that it is likely the most critical component of a food blogger conference.

The content and speakers were rated highly this year, the third highest out of 11 total IFBCs. Yet this area still generated the most suggestions for improvement. In other words, while our content and speakers are very good, we need to improve to be outstanding.

I will take personal responsibility for this as I was in charge of determining content and securing speakers this year. And I have to face the reality that while I used to run a food blog, I gave it up when I moved recently (it was location specific) and I simply am not in touch enough with what food bloggers want.

The Conclusion

Overall, IFBC19 was great. By a more than two to one ratio, attendees preferred it to other food blogger conferences they have attended. Clearly, after stops in Sacramento, New Orleans, and Juneau we have the events and food down. If you have not attended IFBC recently or never have, you are missing out on how great a food blogger conference can be.

And while you rated our content and speakers high, we need to do better. For 2020, we are going to take a new approach. We are going to hire one of you in the IFBC community to determine the content and speakers. We are going to ask that person to do a review of other conferences (and not just food blogger conferences), examine research on what is hot, peruse through recent attendee surveys, and come up with a plan for creating outstanding content and securing outstanding speakers in El Paso. If you are interested, send us a note or sign up for updates as we will be posting about this soon.

IFBC To Head to El Paso, Texas in 2020

June 23, 2019 by Sarah Wohlner

The 2020 International Food Blogger Conference will take place in El Paso, Texas from November 12 – 15.

El Paso is an amazing city. It is now known as “a city reborn,” because it takes old tradition and mixes in modern amenities. El Paso is a zestful melting pot of culture that dates back hundreds of years. The “Sun City” has a way of life and community like no other because it is set amid Mexico and the Southwest. Take everything you love about Texas and combine it with the unique culture and food of Mexico. Yes please!

El Paso does get hot, which is why we elected to move the conference later in the year to November. The average high temperature in El Paso in November is a pleasant 66 degrees, with only three days of rainfall on average in the month.

We have very strong support from Visit El Paso, which will organize our traditional Taste of El Paso event in which the best restaurants in the city come to us to serve their signature small-bite dishes. We will be organizing pre-conference excursions in El Paso on Thursday and a post-conference excursion to Mexico on Sunday.

We will put out a Call for Speakers in the coming months but have already discussed some new and innovative sessions. In addition, we are creating what we believe is an excellent, novel new pricing structure in which blogger, media, and influencer attendees can elect to receive a $150 or $300 discount off the registration price by agreeing to publish a blog post, Instagram story, or video about one or two of our sponsors. See our Registration page for more details.

Registration is now open and prices increase over time starting August 1, so please consider registering today!

The Single Biggest Takeaway From IFBC19

June 23, 2019 by Sarah Wohlner

The 2019 International Food Blogger Conference in Juneau, Alaska wrapped up today and by all accounts was a big success.

Content for the 2019 version was specifically designed to be at an advanced level and covered all aspects of food blogging and social media including monetization paths, book publishing, creating a business from your blog, mastering social media, writing pitches to brands, and much, much more.

Our unique keynote speaker, Dr. Julia Nordgren, delivered a compelling argument that food bloggers have a role in helping their readers achieve healthy lives. Food blogger Heather Johnson delivered a 20-minute monologue on the Life of a Food Blogger.

The food was fabulous and included an opening reception by the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute, a Taste of Juneau event attended by 18 local restaurants and food producers, a hummus toast buffet by Sabra, and a closing reception by our 2020 host Visit El Paso. Attendees enjoyed pre-conference excursions and tomorrow will be participating in post-conference excursions.

There was a lot to take in and a lot to like.

But in our opinion, perhaps the single biggest takeaway from the 2019 conference is that those brave souls who traveled north to Juneau, Alaska reveled in their decision. The town of Juneau, with only 33,000 inhabitants, pulled out all stops for IFBC attendees and attendees were smitten with the city. Over and over we heard great comments about the food, the chefs, the friendly inhabitants, and the scenery. Any traveler to Juneau would have a great time but coming as part of the IFBC was simply amazing.

Moving a conference such as the IFBC each year is not easy. But it pays dividends in spades to attendees. Thank you, Juneau, for showing us your best.

The Opening Ceremony was a Success

June 21, 2019 by Sarah Wohlner

The International Food Blogger Conference 2019 started off with a bang. Attendees and sponsors alike gathered at the Alaskan State Library & Archives Museum in downtown Juneau. All thanks to Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute, we were able to not just meet but also sample TWO Great American Seafood Cook-off winner’s dishes. Thanks to chef Lionel Uddipa and chef Beau Schooler, our attendees and guests were able to try Alaskan salmon chorizo, Alaska spot prawn escabeche, Alaskan grown carrots with sorrell, house made honey vingar and feta, Alaskan rockfish stew, marinated and chilled Alaskan halibut and cornbread with Alaskan rhubarb, goat cheese, honey butter and aerated corn. A foodies paradise!

It would not be a party without some drinks and Alaskan Brewing Company served us just that! With the drinks flowing and our bellies happy, we were all able to successfully kickoff the start of this year’s International Food Blogger Conference.

What’s next on the agenda?

Today we have an “Advice From the Experts” panel, an open boat lunch by SalmonState, two breakout sessions, “How I Survived the Influencer Plague” by Jordan Catapano of This Girl Walks Into a Bar and “From 0 to 100K Monthly Page Views in 9 Months” by Christine Pittman of COOKtheStory. We will then move into a “Food Writing – A Professional View” session where we will hear from expert bloggers Julia 0’Malley, Katie Workman and Doug Levy. After we will hear from Laura Muller, Oliver Moulin and Laura Lynch in an all-group session called “Food Blogging Around the World.” Next, we will continue with our Gift Suite, Expo and Taste of Juneau event where attendees will sample over 15 different local Juneau restaurant and grab some swag brought to you by our sponsors. Last, but certainly not least, we will end with “Lightning Talks,” where our fellow attendees will have the opportunity to give 5 minute informative and often hilarious talks. Make sure to follow along on our social media channels!

IFBC19 Kicks Off With Food Tours, Helicopters, and Glaciers

June 20, 2019 by Allan

The 2019 International Food Blogger Conference kicked off today in Juneau with four pre-conference excursions: two tours courtesy of Juneau Food Tours, a brew tour at Alaskan Brewing, and a helicopter tour to Mendenhall Glacier.

I was lucky enough to participate in the helicopter ride and glacier visit, put together by Alaskan Brewing. After a thrilling helicopter ride over old-growth forests and ragged mountains, where we saw mountain goats perched on the hillside, we descended to Mendenhall Glacier. Set up on the glacier were two Alaskan Brewing tents with beers, literally on ice, and small local bites including salmon roe, oysters, and smoked cod.

I heard great comments from participants including the following:

  • “I can’t think of a better way to start a food blogger conference.”
  • “If you aren’t impressed with this, I don’t think you will be impressed by anything.”
  • “This was the most amazing thing I have ever done in my life.”

These excursions are one of the huge benefits of changing locations most years, as the IFBC does. If you attended an excursion, please make sure to show your excursion organizer some love in your blog and social media. If you didn’t make it to Juneau next year, we are already planning great excursions for 2020 – to be announced on Saturday!
