2020 Call for Speakers

January 22, 2020 by Allan

It’s that time of year! We are opening up our Call for Speakers for the 2020 International Food Bloggers Conference, which is being held in El Paso, TX on Nov. 12-15.

As we shared earlier this year, we’ve made a few changes to the way we are putting our content plan together (including bringing Raj on as Content Manager!) Another thing we are doing differently this year – pulling content suggestions from IFBC Alumni. We’ve already taken a poll to discern which topics you are interested in learning about, and more importantly which topics you feel are most relevant in the food blogging landscape today.

While we are not limiting our sessions to this list, we are certainly using it to direct the conference topics  outline:

  • Food Photography
  • Food Styling
  • Videography on a Budget
  • Reaching out to Potential Sponsors
  • Negotiating Sponsored Posts
  • PR for Food Bloggers
  • Creating a Media Kit
  • Diversifying Your Revenue Streams
  • Travel and Food Writing
  • Building and Email Marketing Strategy
  • Advanced Search Engine Optimization
  • Instagram Growth Strategies
  • Using Google Analytics to Plan Editorial Content
  • Creating Digital Products and Courses
  • Food Industry Trends
  • Consulting as a Food Blogger
  • Advanced Pinterest
  • Recipe Writing Tips & Tricks

If you have a workshop or presentation idea that fits into one of the above categories, or even if you have something in mind you feel would benefit our attendees that might be outside the box, please apply online via our Call for Speakers form. Submission deadline is February 5.

Selected speakers will receive a complimentary registration to the conference, but must pay their own travel and hotel costs.

Raj from Pink Chai Living Joins IFBC20 to Manage Content

December 3, 2019 by Allan

Earlier this year, we here at the IFBC promised to provide you, our attendees, with better content at IFBC20 and we’re happy to announce we’ve hired one of you to help us fulfill that promise!  Please join us in welcoming Raj Thandhi from Pink Chai Living!

Raj spoke at IFBC19 in Juneau about Successfully Representing Brands Without Being a Star Food Blogger and she’s excited to bring her blogger expertise to El Paso as your Content Manager!

Raj has been blogging at Pink Chai Living for 9 years where she blogs about all things lifestyle – including food! – and is the founder and creative director of Pink Chai Media, a visual content creation studio and digital marketing agency in Surrey, British Columbia.  Raj found her love for food and cooking as a young mom and has continued to explore the culinary world.  She is always pursuing different ways to represent both her Indian heritage and her Canadian roots.  Her recipe for tandoori turkey was recently featured in the Washington Post.

Alumni, be on the lookout for a survey in the coming days asking what you want to hear and learn about at #IFBC20.  Raj will then take those results and find expert speakers on those very topics.  Your input will be key in making IFBC20 successful for your needs!

Not yet registered for IFBC20?  Do so here before the end of December (you’ll save some $$) to see, hear and meet first hand who Raj has selected for your IFBC20 education!

Welcome Raj!

Yes! You Should Know About FTC Disclosures

August 1, 2018 by Kristy Wenz

Today’s post is from #IFBC18 speaker, Stacy Brooks from Tangled Up in Food. Stacy will be sharing the importance of understanding FTC rules for bloggers and influencers at the 10th anniversary conference this month and she’ll share takeaways we can implement immediately! Join us in New Orleans to learn more! Register here.

I’m honored to be speaking at the 2018 International Food Blogger Conference! It was the first blogging conference I attended back in 2014, and I’m looking forward to presenting about the FTC’s disclosure rules for bloggers.

I’ve been blogging since 2011, and I also freelance as a food and travel journalist.  Before making the leap to writing full time, I worked in the legal field for several years as an intellectual property paralegal—I’m fluent in legal jargon and enjoy delving into government rules and regulations like the FTC’s disclosure guidelines.

But what is the FTC, and why do they care about your blog?  FTC stands for the Federal Trade Commission, a government agency that’s in charge of protecting consumers and maintaining competition.  Part of how they do this is by ensuring that statements made to consumers are truthful and not deceptive—it’s commonly referred to as the “truth-in-advertising principle.”

What does this mean for bloggers?  Like magazines, newspapers, TV, and radio, your blog is a form of media that the FTC’s rules cover.  If you have a relationship with a brand—you were given a free product, you’re receiving compensation for a blog post, you’re part of a brand ambassador program—you’re considered an “endorser.”

There are specific rules about what endorsers can and can’t say.  Most importantly, you need to tell your readers that you have a relationship with a brand (a “disclosure”).  The FTC has specific guidelines for how to do that, and in my presentation I’ll outline best practices and common mistakes.

If you’re on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or another social media platform (and what blogger isn’t?) the FTC has guidelines for social media disclosures to your followers, which I’ll also discuss in my presentation.

But why bother?  It’s unlikely that the FTC is monitoring your food blog or Instagram feed.  However, most contracts with brands and PR firms require that your posts include a disclosure in compliance with FTC guidelines—it’s up to you to be informed and make sure you’re meeting the terms of your contract.  In addition, the FTC disclosure rules ensure an even playing field, and most importantly, they’re the law.

I’m looking forward to sharing more information at my breakout session on Friday, August 24 at 2:15 pm.  Whether you’re currently working with brands and destinations or would like to in the future, this session will fill you in on everything you need to know in order to follow the FTC’s guidelines.  We’ll also work through some hands-on case studies so that you can practice what you’ve learned.

See you in New Orleans!

New IFBC Website and More Changes

February 20, 2017 by Allan

We are pleased to announce a number of new changes to the International Food Blogger Conference, most prominent of which is this new website.

The IFBC is now in its ninth season and we change things every year. But for 2017, we are making the following significant changes, all with the goal of presenting a better experience for our attendees, sponsors, and speakers.

  1. We have created this new website to provide the IFBC a distinct identity from Foodista.com, host of the previous site. Foodista.com is a large, complicated site and this new one will make it easier to highlight the IFBC.
  2. We finally activated our email RSS feed. People have been providing us their email for years without our RSS feed ever being implemented but now those of you on the list will receive an email each time we publish a news post. Join via the box to the right!
  3. We have a new, fantastic Advisory Board that will help us with content and speaker suggestions, securing local food providers, and just about anything else. Please check them out.
  4. We have launched two new social media accounts. You can now find the IFBC on Pinterest and Instagram. Be sure to follow us there! And for past IFBC attendees, as well as those registered for #IFBC17, don’t forget you can request to join our Facebook Group for conference updates, news and information.
  5. We are switching the content and speakers role from Foodista to fellow organizer Zephyr Conferences. Foodista has arranged the content and speakers from the beginning and we decided to try something new. Zephyr will use the same system it successfully uses in its other five conferences (public Call for Content this month followed by a vote by conference alumni of potential sessions).
  6. We are trying a new venue by holding #IFBC17 in the Sacramento Convention Center. One of the positives is that it allows us to find a very nice, low-cost host hotel which we couldn’t otherwise use since it doesn’t have meeting space.
  7. We have brought on food blogger and business owner Kristy Wenz to help with marketing and planning of the conference. You will all be hearing from Kristy in the coming months and can meet her in Sacramento!

We hope to see all of you in Sacramento!
